I participated in Project Runway. It was a team challenge. The idea was that we were split into teams of three. We had to create a design and buy fabric, but then one person from each team was supposed to move to another team, while still formally being part of the first team and being responsible for the result of their original team’s work, but actually working for the other team. Essentially, a planted person. They were supposed to disrupt the team they were working with. But you couldn’t do a bad job either, because of your sense of dignity!
My task was to sew a top in an hour and a half. I was running late. I rushed in, and they told me I had 110 minutes to sew the top. But that’s not all. During that time, I also had to make something to go with the top, so the model wouldn’t walk the runway in just a top. Plus, I had to pick out accessories – shoes and a bag – all within the 110 minutes.
I ran to SAS (a fabric store), started rushing around, but they not only stopped selling fabric by weight, they had completely stopped selling knitwear (which I needed for my design). And SAS, of course, looked completely different. In the end, I found an interesting lycra fabric – a gray-lavender color with some blue and pink stripes of lurex. I came up with the idea of making a simple kimono-style top with a flowing neckline, but placing the stripes on the back diagonally to make it interesting. I’d make the skirt simple with a vertical stripe. It would be cool.
I grabbed the fabric, checked if I had enough for my design, then rushed to find accessories. I wanted white sandals, but they were all gone. I grabbed a golden bag, but then decided to keep it simple and picked red stilettos.
Then the dream ended. It was a nightmare, really, not a dream.
